Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

McHugh's Annotations explicates foreign words, English overtones, place names, personal names, phrases parodied, song titles and quotations, literary sources, historical events, and more. Most notable is the arrangement of the book: each page corresponds, line by line, and word-placement by work-placement, with a page of Finnegans Wake. By placing the two books side by side, the reader can eliminate the need to consult alphabetical lists, indexes, or other devices in other handbooks.

Includes bibliographical references.

CHOICE Review

Those familar with the first edition (CH, Dec'80) will be used to its unusual format: the pagination follows that of the Viking edition of Finnegans Wake. The thousands of brief annotations are printed in places on each page that correspond to the text they explain. This revised edition brings additions and, occasionally, deletions to each page, " (pref.). As with the first edition, McHugh glosses Joyce's encyclopedic allusions to words in more than 60 languages, persons, musical works, literary works, geographical places, religions, Catholic liturgy, folklore, mythology, historical events, and internal elements such as the graphic sigla used to represent characters throughout the text. The language of neologism that characterizes Finnegans Wake allows almost limitless possiblities for allusion, but McHugh remains conservative, omitting what he feels are obvious references and using Joyce's notebooks to substantiate the inclusion of many annotations. Of the dozen or so reference works to Finnegans Wake, McHugh's Annotations is the essential choice for college libraries. W. S. Brockman University of Illinois at Urbana--Champaign
