School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8--Hallucinogens doesn't waste space on botanical information or history, concentrating solely on what the drugs do and how they alter behavior. Simulated situations personalize basic information found in titles such as Drugs and You (Messner, 1990) by Arnold Madison. Drugs and Suicide answers common questions about suicide, followed by a brief introduction to views of the subject in law, literature, and religion. The influences of drugs and alcohol on suicidal behavior are shown, with suggestions on how to detect such behavior and where to get help. Teen Suicide (Lerner, 1986) by Janet Kolehmaninen and Sandra Handwerk is an easy to read, more in-depth treatment of this subject, but only mentions the influence of drugs and alcohol. Both of these newer books feature well-composed, full-color and black-and-white photographs that show teens of both sexes and different ethnic groups. The distinguishing feature here, however, is the reading level, which is about grade four. Although there is nothing new here, these are good choices for hi/lo readers. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
