School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up This excellent career biography, well researched and remarkably free of bias, covers Kissinger's earlier years as a scholar with Harvard University and the Council on Foreign Relations, although a full three-quarters of the book is devoted to his philosophy and recommendations as the foreign policy advisor, Secretary of State, and peace negotiator for four Presidents. Israel treats readers to an interesting, informative, and occasionally intellectual examination of both a compellingly intelligent strategist and the complex international situations of the 1960s and 1970s. Provocative and well-captioned black-and-white photographs appear on nearly every page. Catherine vanSonnenberg, LaJolla Country Day School, Calif. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. Henry Kissinger, whose shaping of American foreign policy under several administrations brought him an international reputation and put him at the center of controversy in the Vietnam era, is the subject of this balanced biography that emphasizes his academic credentials and traces his rise as a foreign policy expert. Coverage is light on Kissinger's early years, noting his German childhood and his family's emigration to escape Nazi rule. More extensive reportage is found on his brilliant academic career, which resulted in a position at the Council on Foreign Relations, a friendship with Nelson Rockefeller, and the beginnings of government service. The Vietnam years are examined closely, but little is told about Kissinger's life since leaving his government post. A useful study, profusely illustrated with news photos of the time and containing an introductory essay on leadership by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. DMW. 973.924 (B) Kissinger, Henry / Statesmen / Nobel Prizes Biography [CIP] 86-13712
