Booklist Review

The Wars of the Roses-- that turbulent era from the 1377 accession of King Richard II to the 1485 death of Richard III-- constitute one of those complicated, infinitely fascinating, crucial episodes in English history that needs clear and lively explanation in order for the general reader to comprehend all its dimensions. This beautifully illustrated oversize book fills the bill. Combining excerpts from chronicles of the time with interspliced background material by modern contributors, it expertly covers all the people, places, and events pertinent to a period of time that saw the removal from the throne of the direct Planatagenet line and the subsequent duel for the crown between the cadet branches of the great Plantagenent family, the Lancasters and the Yorks. Glossary, bibliography, and index. BH.
