Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This important new study presents the most complete account to date of verbal efficiency theory and its implications for reading disability, learning to read, and beginning reading instruction. Following a review of basic research, the author provides a thorough account of skilled reading processes and carefully delineates the reasons for differences in reading ability. Comparisions between adult and child readers and between normal readers and dyslexics illuminate the theoretical discussion and demonstrate practical applications in therapy and pedagogy. Reading Ability will be of particular interest to students and researchers in educational psychology, cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, and reading psychology.

Includes indexes.

CHOICE Review

A scholarly book that will contribute to the increasing theoretical works on reading written by Perfetti (psychologist, linguist, and researcher). This is a comprehensive discussion of reading ability, and it includes an extensive examination of differences that affect the ability to read proficiently. Noted for the development of the theory of verbal efficiency, Perfetti expands the theory further on the basis of recent and/or original research and presents it as a ``framework for understanding reading ability.'' Included are chapters on cognitive and psycholinguistic perspectives, lexical processes, comprehension, and speech processes in reading ability. Perfetti explains the development of reading skills from early to adult reading, and a chapter on dyslexia includes various philosophies and the verbal and linguistic factors most closely related to general reading ability. The final two chapters deal with verbal efficiency and reading instruction plus a discussion on approaches by reading authorities such as Goodman, Smith, and Chall. Chapter notes provide additional comments and resources. Summaries. Recommended for reading specialistics, psychologists, teachers, graduate students.-V. Horns, University of Alabama at Birmingham
