Gr. 6-9. Examining the history of the U.S. Supreme Court and its current role, Friedman also describes pivotal court cases and their effects on American society and government. The last chapters explain the procedures of the Court today, providing intriguing glimpses of the daily work and demeanor of the justices, who constitute that branch of federal government least in the public eye. Friedman's survey is well researched, well balanced, and well written. While the numerous black-and-white illustrations, mainly photographs, give the book a less-imposing look, they do not add greatly to the text.
