Library Journal Review

Of the myriad analyses of the landslide Reagan victory in 1984, this is one of the most insightful, thorough, and conservative. Brookhiser, a young National Review writer, has a Buckley-esque pluck and an eye for the absurd. He argues convincingly that the Reagan record from 1980 to 1984 became the ``givens'' of American political life and that the Democrats had a tough time running against him for this reason. Chapters on the Democratic candidates are awash in humorous references to their foibles, but Brookhiser's indictment of Jesse Jackson is scathing. Though covered extensively, Walter Mondale is discounted as a disciple of the old politics and his party as the captive of groups. Brookhiser's analysis of the new conservative revolution is excellent, his look into the future more pedestrian. Highly recommended.
