CHOICE Review

This collection, which provides significant insights into American sports and their place in our society, is a valuable addition to numerous books that deal with many of the same topics. The editor is the founder of two sports journals (Arena and Journal of Sports and Social Issues), and is the director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University. He has selected the best readings from these two journals for inclusion in this book, along with the work of a group of scholars who have been leaders in the social analysis of sport. The nine areas covered are those most frequently dealt with in this type of study. The article by Robert Lipsyte, ``Sports World Revisited,'' is especially well done and is considered a classic. The editor's works on racism in sport, the Olympic Games, and sport and apartheid are to be considered primary works in these areas of study. A comprehensive bibliography that is up to date accompanies most readings. The work will be of interest to those studying sport and society and to the sports fan who wishes to learn more than the score and who won the game. Undergraduate, community college, and general readership.-F.D. Handler, St. Bonaventure University
