CHOICE Review

As Dickinson states in his introduction, ``marketing research is growing-in numbers, in intellect, and in sophistication.'' One might add that marketing research is growing in the volume of its publishing; this bibliography, divided into three topical sections (marketing research function, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques), and further divided by numerous subcategories, is the first solid attempt in several years to gain control of the field as a whole. Allan Pennington and Robert Peterson's Reference Guide to Marketing Literature (1970), primarily concerned with marketing research, does not reflect new developments; Hugh Wales's Basic Bibliography on Marketing Research (3rd ed., 1974) is also out of date; and bibliographies on aspects of marketing research appear sporadically in the ``American Marketing Association Bibliography Series.'' These titles, however, include brief annotations with each entry: Dickinson does not, and thereby limits the overall utility. Other minor irritants with Dickinson include incomplete or nonexistent indexing of annuals, collections, and conference proceedings, and the lack of any stated criterion for the inclusion of textbooks. As with all printed bibliographies compiled from computer databases, the book is less accessible and less valuable than the database. Despite reservations, this will be an important acquisition for academic libraries and for public libraries supporting the business community.-M.K. Ewing, St. Cloud State University
