Published in 1987, the first edition of The Struggle for the American Curriculum was a classic in curriculum studies and in the history of education. This new third edition is thoroughly revised and updated, and includes two new chapters on the renewed attacks on the subject curriculum in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as the way individual school subjects evolved over time and were affected by these attacks.

CHOICE Review

Kliebard (University of Wisconsin-Madison) is an established authority on curriculum history. His present work is an intellectual history of the topic, examining the conflicting theories of various curriculum reformers starting with Charles W. Eliot. Next follows a parade of educational thinkers-William Torrey Harris, Joseph M. Rice, Lester Frank Ward, G. Stanley Hall, John F. Bobbitt, Edward Lee Thorndike, David Snedden, Charles Prosser, Calvin Woodward, William Heard Kilpatrick, George Counts, Harold Rugg, and always John Dewey, who appears throughout the book. Emphasis is on a few basic ideas, contrasting the humanist approach with the scientific curriculum, vocationalism, the experience curriculum, social reconstructionism, life adjustment, and the return to basics in the 1950s. There is little discussion of classroom practices, however. The book is a good exploration of changing theories, but seems to break little new ground. It does not supersede Edward Krug's two-volume The Shaping of the American High School (CH, Sep '64, Jun '72), a work of much richer interpretation. Useful combination footnotes and bibliography, with helpful illustrations. Recommended for academic libraries.-R.D. Cohen, Indiana University Northwest
