Library Journal Review

Written for the high school athlete whose dream is a place on a college and/or professional team, this handbook shows how to achieve athletic excellence as well as a productive life after sports. Lapchick ( Broken Promises: racism in American sports , LJ 7/84) presents the chilling ins and outs of success for young men and women athletes. He intersperses inspirational messages from stars with gripping accounts of sports figures ruined by drugs, alcohol, or gambling. Common sense and solid advice dominate. Lapchick presents an abundance of information: how to select the right college, questions to ask the coach, etc. Although the book is written on a high school level and is occasionally preachy, parents, coaches, and counselors will find it invaluable. For all public and high school libries. Patricia Smith Butcher, Trenton State Coll. Lib., N.J. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
