CHOICE Review

Matthews (Law Library, Southern Illinois Univ.) remains faithful to the format and focus of previous editions. Her annotated list of ready reference materials for answering legal and "peripheral" questions is selective (under "Directories: Education" she lists Barron's Profiles of American Colleges but not Peterson's Annual Guide to Graduate Study). She emphasizes federal and general reference materials; state materials are excluded. Contents are arranged alphabetically by title within 14 broad topics (e.g., "Almanacs," Court Decisions," "Statistics") and 22 subtopics ("Dictionaries--Foreign Language," "Research/Bibliography--Style Manuals"). In addition to title, author, and publisher, each citation includes LC classification, frequency, and format (microform, CD-ROM, online). The brief annotations are descriptive rather than evaluative. The index is confined to title (no subjects, no cross-references). Significant differences in this edition include a greater number of listings (more than 475 sources) and additional notations on format (online and CD-ROM). Matthews omits notations of print resources that are accessible on the Internet. Highly recommended both for reference and collection development for librarians fielding legal reference queries. L.
