CHOICE Review

Porter (Environmental and Energy Study Institute) and Brown (World Resources Institute) offer an excellent and timely study of global environmental problems and efforts to address them. Drawing heavily on regime theory, they examine such fundamental questions as how international regulatory frameworks are constructed, who the principal actors are within them, and how normative standards are enforced. In the process, they analyze through carefully selected case studies a remarkable range of environmental problems--e.g., ozone depletion, the overexploitation of the African elephant, disposal of toxic waste. Their prose is clear and concise and complemented by useful graphs, photographs, and other visual materials. Thoroughly documented, the volume includes a helpful index, bibliography, chronology, and glossary. Although clearly designed as a text for courses in international environmental policy, this book should be of great interest to a general audience and is strongly recommended for all collections. There is nothing comparable.
