CHOICE Review

Stearns's challenge with this book is obvious: How does an author deal with the worldwide aspects of the industrial revolution in 234 pages? The breadth of the book is excellent. Many countries totally overlooked in most books get treatment here. Especially strong are Chapter 8, which looks at Japan's early years as an industrial nation, and Chapter 12, which looks at Israel and the Pacific Rim countries as well as other possible industrializing countries. Stearns's approach completely integrates the social changes that resulted from the industrial revolution. Unfortunately, the breadth of the work comes at the expense of depth. The book is short on the statistics that would bring Stearns's capable summaries to life. While the relative absence of charts and other empirical support hurts, Stearns does provide a good bibliographical section. In summary, this book would serve as an excellent text in an introductory course on the industrial revolution or as a supplemental text for a general history course from 1800 on. It is well written, easily accessible to general readers, and presupposes no technical background for the reader.
