CHOICE Review

All scientists who work with chemicals should know the basic principles of environmental toxicology, to protect both themselves and the general public. Recent legislation has encouraged industries and colleges to expand their coverage of this topic, but although excellent toxicology texts are available (i.e., Casarett and Doull's Toxicology, ed. by M. Amdur, J. Doull, and C. Klaassen; 4th ed., 1991), few introductory books include environmental aspects of toxicology. Zakrzewski's book should be useful for science majors or as a self-study reference for practicing professionals. The presentation is clear and readable, although it presumes at least one course in organic chemistry, and so has limited use for undergraduates. The author neglects some topics that would be valuable, such as epidemiology, reproductive toxicology, and sources of toxicity information (i.e., reference books or material safety data sheets); otherwise, a worthwhile book.-H.
