Booklist Review

This is a revision of a very useful directory first published in 1989 [RBB Ag 89]. It provides information on more than 12,000 programs and facilities in the U.S. involved in the prevention and treatment of various addictions. The listings are from state and local directories of programs, professional journals, telephone directories, and the National Institute of Drug Abuse's NDATUS database. Each agency has responded to a questionnaire. The format remains unchanged. Entries are arranged by state, then by city, and, within the city, alphabetically by the name of the center or program. A table of contents directs users to the pages for each state. A list of abbreviations and sample entries explain the format. All entries contain the address and telephone and fax numbers of the facility. They may also include any of the following: addictions treated, treatment methods, setting, statistics on average number of clients and average stay for inpatient facilities, specialty groups served, payment methods accepted, accommodations, and parent organizations. The information on statistics, payment, and parent organizations is new in this edition. There is no index that would enable the reader to locate, say, the Betty Ford Clinic, without knowing its address. Drug, Alcohol, and Other Addictions does not evaluate the programs listed. Two older sources, Rehab: A Comprehensive Guide to Recommended Drug-Alcohol Treatment Centers in the United States (Harper, 1988) and The 100 Best Treatment Centers for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (Avon, 1988), offer evaluations of a limited number of centers. The size and scope of this work make it a good source for all collections, but the price of the second edition is three times that of the first, and it contains 6,000 fewer entries. Obviously some programs and centers have closed, but the huge price increase puts this directory beyond the reach of many libraries that would like to update their collections. Oryx will check its database for changes of address for centers through its toll-free customer- service line, so librarians can verify information about centers and programs listed in the first edition or in other sources.
