Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. According to Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.'s, introduction to this series, great leaders can change the course of history but whether for good or ill depends on how they lead and the ends they seek. Franco's leadership, according to the author, ``crushed Spain under an iron jackboot of censorship, torture, and death.'' Garza traces Franco's development from an undersized boy who grew up insulated from his country's growing revolutionary movement, to his days in military school, and his leadership in the Foreign Legion in Morocco. Garza carefully details the tumultuous and complex events that led to civil war in Spain and portrays a canny, calculating Franco making the right moves to bring himself to power. One chapter is devoted to the idealistic young men of the American Lincoln Brigade and their efforts to defend democracy in Spain, but the U.S. government is seen as self-serving in its unwillingness to oppose Franco's Fascist state at the time of World War II, and its embracing of the regime later on when Spanish bases were deemed essential to opposing Russian communism. Frequent black-and-white photographs accompany this revealing picture of Spanish fascism and one of its leaders.
