Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. The memorable First Lady's life is well chronicled in this solidly written biography. The account describes Eleanor's emotionally deprived childhood, the feelings of inferiority that plagued much of her young womanhood, and her slow blossoming into an astute, hardworking fighter for common people. McAuley doesn't canonize the woman; she describes Eleanor and Franklin's marital problems, notes Eleanor's weakness as a mother, and acknowledges Franklin's relationship with Lucy Mercer, who was at his side when he died. Well-captioned photographs are plentiful throughout, and a list for further reading is appended. DMW. 973.917'092 (B) Roosevelt, Eleanor / First ladies [CIP] 86-21612
