School Library Journal Review

Gr 7 Up How Harry Truman, whose ventures earlier in life, except in his mili tary career, ended either in little success or in downright failure, first forayed into local politics at age 38 and then went on to become a president acclaimed by many as great, makes a biography which young sters will appreciate. That Truman be came president at FDR's death after being vice-president for only a few months and then went on to oversee the completion of the war and to lead the U.S. and its allies into peacetime makes fascincating read ing. The tone of the book is not totally adulatory, however, as Leavell elucidates Truman's involvement with the Pender gast machine in his early political years and the arguments still raging on whether he should have dropped the bomb. The author helps readers by defining political and historical terms. Black-and-white photographs are numerous, although looking at them and reading the captions and quotations on almost every page for supplemental information does disturb the flow of reading. A straightforward biogra phy of a straightforward president that will be useful in most libraries. Susan F. Marcus, Pollard Middle School, Need ham, Mass. (c) Copyright 2010.
