CHOICE Review

This beautifully written, well-edited handbook is a summary of research findings, best practices, and legal precedents that explores special education as a field and a general enterprise. Organized into 13 sections, the book explores critical information and controversial issues in a single volume. It is intended to be a reference volume and is presented as such. Starting with the background of the field, the sections include such topics as special education law, the relationship between general-special education, assessment, administration of programs, effective instruction, transition, families, and culturally related issues. Although the book is directed toward special education in the US, international issues are briefly considered. While Kauffman (emer., Univ. of Virginia) and Hallahan (Univ. of Virginia) do not claim that this book encompasses every aspect of special education, the book does an excellent job or providing a clear, concise overview of the current field. Pulling from some of the best and brightest minds working in special education today, this book offers a kaleidoscopic view of an ever-changing and always provocative field. The text is readable, informative, and thought provoking, which makes it a valuable reference tool for individuals wishing to expand their understanding of the field. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. R. Ludy Buena Vista University
