CHOICE Review

Another entry into the burgeoning literature on incest. Meiselman, a clinical psychologist, has a private practice in California. The book is aimed first at psychotherapists, second at other professionals (teachers, attorneys, etc.), third at graduate students in relevant areas, and finally at people with incest in their background. Using the now common terminology of incest "victim" or "survivor," the author sketches traumas described by therapy patients, discusses psychoanalytic defense mechanisms (repression, denial, etc.) of such patients, and describes in useful terms an eclectic treatment program she calls reintegration therapy. Meiselman's previous book, Incest: A Psychological Study of Causes and Effects with Treatment Recommendations (1978) and several journal articles written by her demonstrate her knowledge of the field. She appears to be a warm, insightful clinician. Useful for graduate students in various human service areas, and for any readers suffering after effects of incest. -R. W. Smith, California State University, Northridge
