Booklist Review

Gr. 7-10. There have not been many books written for young people about the controversial Iranian leader, making this a recommended choice for purchase until something more accessible comes along. It's hard to fault a book for good scholarship, but Gordon's detailed biography is as much a history of Islam and Iran as it is a portrayal of Khomeini; it is also quite dry. The author, perhaps in an effort to be evenhanded, rarely comments on Khomeini's atrocities. For instance, Gordon makes no mention of the thousands of children who have gone to their deaths as human mine sweepers in the Iran-Iraq war. As with other books in the World Leaders series, this is filled with black-and-white photos, heavily captioned. The format has middle-grade appeal, and readers may be surprised at the text's complexity. A short bibliography of adult books is appended as is a one-page chronology.
