CHOICE Review

Parker has written an esoteric book intended for those with both a strong interest in and a prior knowledge of discourse dynamics. Part 1 gives the criteria for distinguishing discourses and discusses the problem of relating discourse to the real world. Part 2, which looks at the cultural dynamics affecting discourse, has an interesting section that traces the traditional discourse embodied in literature and psychology and shows how the separation between the two areas is gradually being erased by cultural changes. Part 3 deals with three models of discourse for explaining the individual: ecological, psychodynamic, and subjective dynamics. A final section, not often found in books, is a research and reading guide for those who want to do further work in the area of discourse pertaining to social and individual psychology. Some examples of areas in which Parker suggests further reading are empirical studies in construct theory, gender, institutions, and racism. There are 352 references, a more than adequate number for the moderate length of the book. Recommended for graduate-level libraries.-P. Barker, Schenectady County Community College
