CHOICE Review

Regular physical activity is important to overall health and plays a role in preventing and treating many illnesses. In modern society, the major causes of morbidity and mortality are chronic diseases largely influenced by lifestyle. A major component of lifestyle related to diseases is a lack of physical activity. Thus reduced levels of physical activity in childhood may be an important contributing factor to the chronic illnesses of modern society. In this well-written volume, Rowland (a physician, and editor of the journal Pediatric Exercise Science) examines the role of childhood physical activity to health. Part 1 provides information on children's physiologic responses to exercise, which differs in important ways from those of adults. Part 2 evaluates the scientific data for promoting exercise as a health benefit, and Part 3 provides specific approaches for increasing physical activity in children. Extensive reference section; appendix with specific guidelines for physical activity. Worthwhile reading for all health and education students and professionals as well as informed general readers. -R. L. Jones, Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center
