Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The renowned Oxford-Duden pictorial dictionalry is now available in a Spanish/English edition. This unique reference is based onthe premise that certain kinds of information are conveyed more readily and clearly by pictures than by definitions and explanations alone.
Each double-page spread of the dictionary contains a host of vocabulary relating to a subject together with a picture illustrating that subject. In this way, all terminology relating to printing, for example will be found on a sequence of pages with detailed illustrations of the various technical processes, objects, or machines involved. Words are linked by numbers to the illustrations, enabling users to check the meaning of the Spanish or English word against its pictorial representation. Some 384 sections cover a broad range of subjects--from astronomy to supermarkets, automobiles to swimming, ballet to plants--and define more than 28,000 objects or activities. Each volume contains full alphabetical indexes in English and Spanish, making this dictionary easy to use for speakers of English and Spanish alike.

CHOICE Review

Volume 3 of the well-known Duden series, this dictionary is designed to present pictorially objects arranged by subject with both a German and foreign-language definition. The Clarendon Press at Oxford began a few years ago to produce English-language versions of the Duden series, translating the German nouns into American or British English. The value of this endeavor lies less in the lexicographic task of compiling a dictionary than in the quality of the drawings used to define the object in question. The merit of the Duden series has rested upon the excellence of the artist vis-a-vis the skill of the lexicographer, and in this respect the present volume does not fail. Reservations about this series and this volume in particular focus upon the omission of words and phrases uniquely Spanish. One page is devoted to bullfighting, but the overwhelming approach of this dictionary is to explain German-English-American society to Spanish speakers. Omitted in the ``costume'' section are any references to native Spanish clothing or in the ``art'' section any pictures of Mayan temples. In addition, this book lacks an adequate explanation of computers and automation in general: one page with 15 words comprises the ``Computer Center,'' but even there a floppy-disk reader is shown without a hint of what a floppy disk looks like. This section appears to be about five years out of date. At present, this type of dictionary has no rival, so of necessity it should be purchased by colleges, universities, and technical schools with bilingual programs. It will be best used, however, by Spanish speakers who find themselves in an English-speaking country.-W.D. Menefee Jr., The Ohio State University
