CHOICE Review

Dekmejian (SUNY, Binghamton), no stranger to contemporary Middle East scholarship, seeks to explain the upsurge in the manifestation of violence within the Islamic world. His analysis is accomplished with a tightly structured sociopolitical methodology. He argues that Muslim fundamentalism, somewhat like Christian evangelism, is a reaction to external forces perceived to be threatening the community's basic existance. In this instance, the Muslim world has been subject to Western political and then cultural imperialism. After encountering the West, experiencing its imperial control, and absorbing its cultural intrusion, the Islamic world is now reestablishing its fundamental ideals. A basic theoretical discussion is then supported by a number of case studies of Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf. His thesis is further augmented by appendixes of Islamic societies in the Arab world, a glossary of Islamic terms, and a statistical analysis of some of the more prominent Islamic fundamentalist organizations. The author compresses a tremendous amount of information in this work. Numerous statistics cited; significant points highlighted; succinct outlines included. Highly complementary to Voices of Resurgent Islam, ed. by John L. Esposito (CH, Jun '84). Strongly recommended for upper-division and graduate students.-S.R. Silverburg, Catawba College
