CHOICE Review

Empowering children and teachers through active learning and teaching is the goal of this thoughtful and informative book. Although activity might be a clearer description of what Wassermann intends when she speaks of play, her suggested sequence of "play-debrief-replay" provides a useful framework for both new and experienced teachers. As supportive of teachers as she wants them to be of children, Wassermann grounds her approach in a humanistic theory. Her discussion of teacher beliefs, the scheduling of the day, and the arrangement of space is followed by examples of the technique in each aspect of the curriculum. Stressing the importance of the "big idea" to be taught, Wassermann outlines lessons clearly, including the higher order thinking operations required of the children. Debriefing questions and suggestions for replay and creative play are included in each example. Particularly valuable is the analysis of teacher responses to children's work, demonstrating how teacher's evaluative comments can lead to further learning, rather than to discouragement for the children. Teachers will find this a helpful handbook, but so will supervisors and parents. The appendix and reference list provide additional aids. Highly recommended for graduate students and general readers. -S. Sugarman, Bennington College
