CHOICE Review

As the first in an annual series of yearbooks in early-childhood education, this volume is an excellent beginning. The contributors are knowledgeable about a timely and controversial topic. Teacher preparation in early childhood is complicated by the range of settings in which practitioners work. From a review of historical roots to predictions about the future the authors also address the problems of career ladders, of adequate numbers of minority teachers, of changes in the family, and of the nature of education for young children. What does increased professionalization mean in this diverse field and what best suits the educational needs of children from birth through eight years? How are these different from students at other ages and levels? The role of the National Association for the Education of Young Children is examined as is the need for ongoing education for teachers. Given the mandate for reforms in teacher education, this book is a must for those teaching teachers. Other readers will find it enlightening. The reference lists are extensive. Highly recommended S.
