CHOICE Review

Organized in 1940 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, the National Federation of the Blind represents an association of the blind for the blind. The organizational goals are concise: to provide security, opportunity, and equality to the blind. The association also strives to dispel the stereotype that blindness is a totally disabling condition. It survived a schism in the late 1950s that produced the splinter group American Council for the Blind. Matson's book is not a study of the blind in recent American history, nor is it an organizational history. Rather, Matson has complied a source book of the printed speeches of the leaders of the National Federation of the Blind. Approximately 80 to 90 of the book represents unedited source material, with the remainder being little more than introductions to these works. Although historians focusing on recent history as it relates to the blind may find the sources useful, other will still find Frances Koestler's The Unseen Minority (CH, Oct '76) to be the standard work on the blind. -D.
