CHOICE Review

Evinger's directory of military bases is the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide available. Including more than 700 bases and installations in the US,"It is the only single source to comprehensively list the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserve and Joint Service installations, as well as Department of Defense agencies, military camps and stations, security offices and command headquarters offices."Grouped by state and city, the entries in the directory compactly provide a great deal of information: size, contact persons, telephone numbers, branch(es) of service, units, attractions, budget, housing, and cultural and medical facilities. Access is also provided by three indexes: alphabetical, branch of service, and branch of service by state. Evinger's directory is distinguished from Dan Cragg's "The Guide to Military Installations" (2nd ed., 1988) by its comprehensiveness. Cragg's guide, also limited to installations within the US, provides more subjective appraisals in comparatively lengthy narratives. Both sources will be used by advanced ROTC students to prepare for summer camp and training assignments. -P. Heller, Norwich University
