Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. Using a different approach from the rest of the Peoples of North America series (see Osborn, above), Reimers provides an overview of the conditions and events that attracted millions to the New World. Coverage includes accounts of the "old immigrants" from northern and western Europe (predominately Irish, Germans, and Scandinavians) who arrived before 1880; a second wave of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe (Italians and Jews) and Japan who arrived between 1880 and 1920; and a third group of newcomers from Asia, the Caribbean, and the Middle East who have arrived in the U.S. since World War II. Explanations of the political, economic, and social conditions leading to emigration place these events in context, and the resulting impact on American society in terms of economic expansion and cultural diversity is made clear. An extensive use of historical photos and engraving expands the lucid text. Bibliography appended. --Phillis Wilson
