Library Journal Review

Individual essays, many written by authors noted in the field, look to a future U.S. society with a preponderance of aging people. Extrapolating from historical material, demographic data, and longitudinal studies, these pieces predict the changing of society's institutions in response to its changing membership. Possible scenarios include competition with services to children, alteration of present health-care systems, and changing of family patterns. Included are the position of minorities, and such startling suggestions as the ``feminization'' of future social institutions and a questioning of the ``social value'' of retirement. No bibliography, but endnotes. Recommended for specialists. Corrine Muldoon McKinney, Social Sciences Dept., Community Coll. of Philadelphia (c) Copyright 2010.
