Library Journal Review

This first political science dictionary to focus primarily on state and local government covers 290 concepts. Arrangement by chapters (intergovernmental relations, constitutions, finance, cities) allows it to serve as a reference/study guide. Lengthy entries are supported by a clear index. Comparison with Jack Plano and Milton Greenberg's American Political Dictionary (Holt, 1985) reveals extensive overlap, but this book explains terms at more length and provides some unique information. For college and university libraries with a political science or public administration concentration. Mary Jane Brustman, SUNY at Albany Libs. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Another solid contribution to the "Clio Dictionaries in Political Science" series. To those unfamiliar with this series, "dictionary" is defined very loosely. Elliot and Ali describe their work as a dictionary, reference guide, study guide, supplement to a textbook, source of review material, and/or a social science aid. Whatever they choose to call it, readers will find it a useful and well-organized tool that defines and describes the significance of major concepts and terms used to study American state and local government. The authors have drawn their material from a varied and authoritative list of major works in the field. Lower division undergraduates and up. J.A. Shuler Colgate University
