CHOICE Review

This is the final set of Magill's Great Lives from History (see also CH, Apr'89, Apr'90). It contains essays on 476 individuals, and in terms of consistent quality and breadth of geographic coverage, it may well be the best. Well-known figures covered range from Kaiser William II to Mother Teresa, from Sigmund Freud to Eiji Toyoda. As usual, indexes by country and area of achievement are included. The geographic index is the weakest feature of the collection, since it lists under the US only some of those who spent long periods here. (Hindemith, for example, is excluded from that list.) The vestigial listings for East and West Germany will have to be absorbed into the larger listing for Germany in any future editions. To cover in five volumes many noted personages, plus some less known to the average reader, the editor has had to make choices. Thus Derrida is included, but not Foucault. This reviewer misses Umberto Eco and Igor Stravinsky. One laudable feature of this set is its being up to 1989 in terms of deaths and bibliography. Recommended for all public and smaller academic libraries. -T. M. Izbicki, The Johns Hopkins University
