Library Journal Review

Like most books about leadership, this one improves when the author finishes up with generalities and gets down to specifics. Whether it fulfills its ``promise'' (``to double your business leadership effectiveness on any measure you choose'') is debatable; still there are pickings in the book for the would-be leader of a kind not to be found in the many other treatises on the subject. Believing that leadership is a ``mindset and a pattern of behaviors'' that can be learned and taught, Koestenbaum presents and illustrates the meaning of his ``Leadership Diamond.'' This consists of ``four strategies for greatness'': vision (thinking big and new), reality (having no illusions), ethics (providing service), and courage (acting with sustained initiative). The ``greatness'' theme becomes a bit tedious, but there are many compensations. For management collections.--A.J. CHOICE Review

Koestenbaum, a management consultant who previously taught philosophy at San Jose State University, uses a philosophical approach to the development of a leadership orientation. Although this philosophic orientation to leadership may appear to be fresh, the leadership diamond model on which the book is based includes many components of classic behavioral and trait studies of leadership. The four leadership characteristics (or dimensions as the author calls them) are vision, courage, reality, and ethics. One chapter is devoted to the explanation of each dimension. The book is divided into three parts: (1) the need for greatness in the corporate sector; (2) a detailed explanation of the leadership diamond; and (3) A number of applications of the leadership diamond to various business and personal situations. The relatively brief reference list relies heavily on the classics in philosophy and the popular press such as Time, Business Week, and The Wall Street Journal. Highly readable, this book will be of interest to students, professionals, and general readers interested in the topic of leadership.-P. D. Albro, Castleton State College
