CHOICE Review

Our new work culture can be characterized as a shift from the production of goods by machines to knowledge-intensive, often highly technical work dominated by information processing. Harris describes management techniques, organization guidelines, and team-building skills to renew organizations and strengthen human resources during this period of rapid change. The author identifies four issues that deserve special attention: new technologies altering the work culture; proactive vanguard thinking; excellence in organizational culture; and adaptations of fast-growth enterprises. Harris believes that successfully adapting to changing forces in the work environment requires major changes in the manager's function. Harris recommends that managers foster employee self-actualization; talent utilization; meaningful and personalized work experiences; an informal work environment; management by negotiation; networks, continuous learning and computer skills; intense working for fun and profit; corporate social responsibility; and the practices of synergy, risk taking, and innovation. Harris draws on a variety of case studies to demonstrate the implementation of innovative management in response to the transition in the workplace. Especially useful to students of organizational and human resource development. College and university collections.-E. Garaventa, College of Staten Island, CUNY
