CHOICE Review

Schein has produced a valuable and thought-provoking examination of the concept of organizational culture. The interdisciplinary approach is especially valuable in an era in which academic study seems to be more and more narrowly bounded while national and international pressures cry out for breadth of understanding. Schein defines and explains the concept of culture, sharply contrasting two organizational cultures (``multi'' and ``action'') used to illustrate the issues. Part 2 is analytic and deals with the evolution of culture and its moderation by leaders/culture formers. The final section deals with change and organization, and Chapter 12 proved to be of great value in understanding the overall thesis. This book is a worthy product from a distinguished and respected author. The references are excellent; the index is satisfactory. Upper-division and graduate collections as well as professional libraries.-E. Owens, Western Washington University
