CHOICE Review

Goodman, who has served as editor and prime author, has compiled a nice series of papers by 13 authors. The writers have impressive credentials and credit lines in the fields of organizational behavior and psychology. The book is readable and relatively devoid of complex material or statistical research. It appears to be written for general business professionals and students rather than for serious students of organizational behavior. The authors focus on advances in group concepts that could lead to more productive work groups, drawing on laboratory and field experiments, simulations, and case studies. One such area is that of quality circles. The book is well organized and includes a bibliography and name index, but some relevant leaders and their works do not appear, e.g., works of Likert, Argyris, McGregor, and Maslow. Even some recent landmark works are not cited, including Willima Ouchi's Theory Z: How American Business Can Meet the Japanese Challenges (1981), and the well-publicized ``excellence'' themes, e.g., Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman Jr., In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best Run Companies (CH, May '83) and Thomas Peters and Nancy Austin's Passion for Excellence (CH, Sep '85). Additionally, more consideration might have been given to groups in other cultures, particularly in Japan. Last, there is only scant statistical and research evidence presented supporting the concepts discussed.-E.A. Tomeski, Barry University
