CHOICE Review

Carnevale's contribution to the debate surrounding America's declining industrial competitiveness offers "both an intellectual map and a guide to action in the new environment." In Part 1 he traces the emergence of the new global economy, which is based not only on productivity, but includes other factors such as quality, variety, and convenience. Successful competition in the new economy demands new organizational structures oriented toward flexible "networks" of work teams and cooperative strategies. Likewise, the changing economy will affect the nature, availability, and quality of jobs in the future. Workers will need improved skills to deal with new technologies and evolving social conditions of employment. Job skills will shift from the specific to the general, from the concrete to the abstract, and from the repetitious to the exceptional. A total of 16 job skills will become "crucial to success." Only by developing strategies aimed at improving productivity over the long term, the author argues, can America maintain its current status as the world's economic leader. Overall, the study is a good general survey of recent economic changes and their impact on employment in the US. Academic and public library collections.-R. L. Hogler, Colorado State University

Booklist Review

Carnevale, chief economist for the American Society for Training and Development and a member of the Hudson Institute's "Workforce 2000" research team, proclaims that a new world economic order has resulted in new competitive standards. Quality, variety, customization, convenience, and timeliness are all factors that must now be considered along with productivity when measuring competitiveness. Drawing on his training and manpower-analysis expertise, Carnevale identifies the skills needed for the American work force to compete successfully in these categories in the borderless world economy. He also describes the changes organizations must make to help workers acquire and use these skills. Carnevale's scholarly approach makes this book most suitable for academic and large public library collections. A useful bibliography is included. ~--David Rouse
