Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Discusses how to identify and develop plant materials with resistance to insect pests. Covers terminology and categories of resistance, and presents techniques for studying plant resistance. Also gives consideration to potentially resistant material. Examines the molecular biology and genetics of insect resistance in crop plants, and insect genes capable of overcoming resistance to form insect biophytes. The closing chapter presents hitherto unpublished information on the use of transgenic plants with insect resistance and assesses the ways that insect resistant cultivars work with other management techniques to suppress insect populations.

"A Wiley-Interscience publication."

Includes bibliographies and index.

CHOICE Review

An up-to-date approach to plant resistance to insects, the use and application of which has advanced greatly since R.H. Painter's Insect Resistance in Crop Plants (1951, 1968). Studies have been particularly encouraged by an increased interest in and use of integrated pest management (IPM) systems owing in part, to continued limitations placed on pesticides. Breeding for plant resistance against certain pests has been very successful in the last three decades. Following a general introduction are chapters titled "Antixenosis--The Effect of Plant Resistance on Insect Behavior," "Antibiosis--The Effects of Plant Resistance on Insect Biology," "Tolerance--The Effects of Plant Growth Characteristics on Resistance to Insects," "Location of Sources of Plant Resistance to Insects," "Techniques to Measure Plant Resistance," "Factors Affecting the Expression of Plant Resistance to Insects," "Genetics and Inheritance of Plant Resistance to Insects," "Insect Biotypes That Overcome Plant Resistance," and "Use of Plant Resistance in IPM Systems." A useful reference for upper-level undergraduate students and researchers in entomology and other plant protection disciplines. Chapter-end references; subject and species index. Recommended for all academic libraries. -D. M. Tuttle, University of Arizona
