CHOICE Review

Washington and Oyemade (Howard) have joined to write their assessment of how well Project Head Start has met the changing needs of the families that the project series. This work answers the question of how Head Start has served as a vehicle for helping poor families to achieve economic self-sufficiency. As a reference tool, the book contains essays on the history, program effectiveness, and family trends as they relate to Head Start. The trends include the feminization of poverty, rise in teen parenting, increased number of mothers in the workforce, and the heightened challenge for low-income families to attain economic self-sufficiency. Following the essays, the authors present a reference list and annotated bibliography. Author and subject indexes increase the usefulness of the work. The authors aim to create a more meaningful connection between academic research and public policy needs. Toward this end they have written an interdisciplinary, holistic, and comprehensive reference tool. Appropriate for students at graduate and undergraduate levels.-J.L. Susskind, Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg
