CHOICE Review

Stevens, a recognized authority in the area of comparative gastroenterology, has succeeded in presenting a lucid, well-organized, and balanced treatment of this subject matter. The first three chapters are devoted to the general characteristics and anatomical variations in the digestive systems of various vertebrate classes (including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds) and, more specifically, the various orders of mammals. Chapter 4 is devoted to motor activity and digesta transit, followed by two chapters focused on the physiology and biochemistry of food digestion, microbial fermentation, nutrient synthesis, and end product absorption. The remaining three chapters are concerned with secretion and absorption of electrolytes and water, neurohumoral regulation of digestion, and conclusions. Although the text of necessity was not intended to be encyclopedic in scope, it is of sufficiently detailed depth and breadth as to be an asset in most academic libraries. The binding and print of the text are top quality; the 92 figures and 22 tables are all highly informative, clear in detail, and integrated well with the text material. The almost 900 references cited, including several through 1987, clearly add to the book's value as a library acquisition. -S. L. Smith, Bowling Green State University
