In 1838, New England scholar William H. Prescott published his History of the Reign of Ferdinand & Isabella, originally a three-volume work. Here, editor David Bowen has condensed into concise, readable form Prescott's tale of court intrigue in Spain and Portugal and the determination of Columbus to launch his historic voyages with the dogged support of Queen Isabella. The text features illustrations by Frank W. Harris as well as an erudite introduction by Robert W. Patch that puts the Columbus experience into a contemporary context. Good, solid--if more conventional--information that will have value for a wide audience. ~--Martin Brady
