Library Journal Review
This compendium of 814 newly created statistical tables contains contemporary information, clearly laid out and compiled from a wide-ranging set of national and international sources. Primary subject groupings include commercial and personal economics, living and child-care arrangements, education, employment, vital statistics, government, the military, law enforcement, religion, public opinion, health, sexuality, and recreation. For purposes of comparison, many tables include data for men or women organized by racial group. Short citations accompany the tables, with fuller information available in the source list. A subject and geographic index, a detailed table of contents, and clear head notes facilitate subject access. While it emphasizes U.S. data, this handbook's international compass and clear layout make it particularly valuable.--Cynthia Harrison, Federal Judicial Ctr., Washington, D.C. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review
As statistical compendiums go, this seems to be a reasonable compilation, conveniently presenting a broad spectrum of data--about 50% focused on US women and 50% on women " " can mean focus on an individual city or country, five countries, or many countries. The annotated " gives a description of the original source as well as bibliographic information. Source notes appearing with each table may give information concerning the definition of terms, other information appearing in the original source, warnings about the data, or even sources of further discussion on a topic. The " index gives additional access to the tables, though the subject terms are not always immediately recognizable in the terminology of the tables themselves, e.g., the table listed under the subject term " uses the term " The table just above it, which is not listed under " has a column heading " Another minor irritation is that US statistics are not always labeled as such. Printed on ANSI standard permanent paper, sewn and cased in serviceable, paper covered boards. Recommended for both academic and public libraries. J. E. Peelle Kenyon College
