CHOICE Review

A general survey of toxicological chemistry that introduces the chemical nature and reactions of toxic substances, with emphasis on the relationship between chemical structures and their toxic effects. Manahan (University of Missouri) is an expert in environmental chemistry and is actively teaching, researching, and writing journal articles and books. After an introduction to terminology and to the classification of substances encountered in toxicological chemistry, the author presents an excellent overview of chemistry and biochemistry for readers with minimal chemistry background. Throughout, Manahan discusses introductory material before outlining the toxicological processes. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with the effects of exposure to toxic substances and the biochemical actions of toxicants, subsequent chapters are organized on the basis of inorganic and organic chemical substances, with three chapters on toxic inorganic elements, compounds, and organometallics and six chapters on organic compounds classified according to toxic functional groups. The writing style is crisp, easily understandable, and authoritative. A handy reference on hazardous substances for college and public libraries. -W. H. Hohman, Marietta College
