CHOICE Review

In this revision of their 1980 book, The Latin American Political Dictionary (CH, Mar'81), Rossi and Plano (Western Michigan Univ.) have responded to the many political changes in Latin America in the past decade. This edition is 20% larger with 50 new items and a new chapter on economic integration. Like the original, this edition's entries are organized in broad subject-oriented chapters, and it therefore does not conform to the common concept of a dictionary. Earlier questions regarding its utility as a traditional reference resource remain. Access to individual terms, however, is facilitated by a detailed index, numbered entries, and extensive cross-references. Entries are concise yet clearly written and convey essential introductory information. The omission of an entry on the North American Free Trade Agreement compromises the book's timeliness. Its most useful attribute: each entry includes a section that explains the significance of a term or concept. This source is less valuable as a traditional political dictionary than as a complement to textbooks and a study guide to introductory classes in Latin American politics and history. In this context the work is recommended for undergraduate libraries. J. H. Pollitz; Augustana College
