CHOICE Review

In a period in which much of the scholarly literature and the bulk of popular literature have been devoted to the problems of women in our capitalist, racist, sexist, phallocentric society, the author (director emeritus, New York Center for Psychoanalytic Training) focuses on the emotional conflicts of men in key areas of life: love, sex, communication, work, creativity, among others. Through elaborate use of case histories, some of them composite, Fine seeks to identify the cultural and interpersonal factors that bar most men from attaining the "analytic ideal." He also provides intervention suggestions that might assist individual men in overcoming specific problems and emotional hang-ups. Although the author works from a (liberalized) psychoanalytic framework, the book is jargon-free. Fine's absorbing book is intended for specialists with different psychotherapeutic foundations, but it is accessible to readers at all levels. -B. Kaplan, Clark University
