The New Grove Dictionary of American Music is the most comprehensive and enlightening history of America's musical heritage ever published.
American Grove is focused solely on the unique styles and traditions of American music. It covers popular musical forms such as country, rock, pop, soul, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and big band. It explores America's vibrant classical heritage--from colonial times to John Cage--and also provides substantial articles on the traditional music of diverse cultures such as Native Americans, Jewish Americans, and Islamic Americans.
The Dictionary investigates the social, cultural, and historical forces that shaped our distinctive musical identity--from the Civil War to the impact of pop culture...the rise of technology to the plurality of religions...from the supremacy of film to the evolution of the civil rights movement.
The New Grove Dictionary of American Music includes:
BL 3,500 biographies of significant composers, performers, singer-songwriters, impresarios, conductors, writers, producers, publishers and patrons--including foreign-born musicians who settled in America
BL Entries on American cities as diverse as Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Anchorage
BL Wide-ranging survey articles on specialized forms of music including patriotic music, film music, vaudeville, and early music revival
BL Ground-breaking articles on general topics such as copyright, broadcasting, music therapy, and education
BL Comprehensive listings of music libraries, societies, institutions, periodicals, discographies, festivals, and awards

Includes bibliographies.

Library Journal Review

One can only use the highest superlatives to describe this major reference work. Building on The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians ( LJ 12/15/80), the thoroughly revised sixth edition of a longstanding reference, the present work is a much-needed guide to our national music. The style is both elegant and scholarly, and though the format follows that of other New Grove publications, the typography is significantly better, the margins wider, and the photographs sharper. All phases of American musicserious, popular, jazz, and folkare superbly covered by outstanding specialists. In particular, the articles on regional music, American composers and performers, publishing, periodicals, libraries, and American cities will set the standard for years to come. A work that will not easily be superseded. William Shank, CUNY Graduate Sch. Lib. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review

About a third of the entries here are revised and updated from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians; the remainder are totally new. Covering a wide range of musical genres, from the Juilliard String Quartet to the Beach Boys, this encyclopedia lives up to the standard set by its parent.
