Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This book studies apartheid--its background, ideology, implementation, and function--and reform-apartheid, the South African government's latest solution to the continuing crisis. Part One demonstrates that the apartheid system was not unique; rather, that it was built upon the segregation order which had developed as South Africa industrialized with the discovery of diamonds and gold. Part Two critically examines the current South African situation and addresses possibilities for a resolution to the present conflict. The authors explore the emerging political trends, the effects of the sanctions campaign, the prospects for an internationally backed settlement, and the effects of internal pressure for change. Drawing on available literature, the authors then propose a framework for resolution.

CHOICE Review

This book may be classified among the last of the pre-Mandela books about South African politics. It is an extraordinarily useful synthesis of the evidence in support of the often debated thesis that South African politics is essentially the story of the struggle between Afrikaner and African nationalism, a theory the authors develop in Negotiating South Africa's Future (CH, Dec'89). Although Giliomee and Schlemmer acknowledge that part of the conflict between the races in South Africa is about inequality, about the clash of interests, and about unequal access to the rewards of the economic system, they focus their possible solutions on the struggle the Afrikaners and the Africans wage over preserving their respective national security and identity. Part 1 examines the background to apartheid, its ideology, how it functions, and the various reforms of the 1980s. The more original Part 2 deals with the strategies, trends, and possible resolutions of the dilemmas raised by efforts to cope with moves away from apartheid into an era in which the two nationalisms can be addressed. The book makes excellent reading for its provocative insights and thoughtful nuances about the theories, practices, and future of apartheid. -M. E. Doro, Connecticut College
