Delinquency in a Birth Cohort, published in 1972, was the first criminologi cal birth cohort study in the United States. Nils Christie, in Unge norske lovorertredere, had done the first such study as his dissertation at the University of Oslo in 1960. Professor Thorsten Sellin was the inspiration for the U.S. study. He could read Norwegian, and I could a little because I studied at the University of Oslo in my graduate years. Our interest in pursuing a birth cohort study in the United States was fostered by the encouragement of Saleem Shah who awarded us a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to begin our birth cohort studies at the University of Pennsylvania by investigating the delinquency of the 1945 cohort. We studied this group of 9,945 boys extensively through official criminal history and school records of their juvenile years. Subsequently, we followed up the cohort as adults using both adult arrest histories and an interview of a sample of the cohort. Our follow-up study was published as From Boy to Man, From Delinquen cy to Crime in 1987.

CHOICE Review

A rigorous follow-up comparative cohort analysis of Wolfgang, Figlio and Thorsten Sellin's Delinquency in a Birth Cohort (1972). Like the earlier study, this book will stimulate intensive public policy debate on delinquency and the juvenile justice system. Although research implications are directed toward US juvenile courts, the research itself involves males born in 1945 and 1958 who remained in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are several distinctive differences between the two cohorts that require the reader's attention as one moves through the authors' questions. Each chapter answers, in a detailed descriptive fashion, critical questions on the prevalence and incidence of delinquent behavior, recidivism, age at onset, chronic offender status, and police and court dispositions. Contingency table and statistical analysis, graphic presentations, and charts present the data supporting the discussion. At least three chapters have long and extremely involved discussions on key factors related to delinquent behavior. The technical writing style will discourage readers who lack a commitment to and experience with a research-methodological approach. However, the analysis of chronic offenders has significant policy implications that must be skeptically examined by the reader. As a project report, this book does not attempt to present other research bearing on delinquency behavior and issues. Nevertheless, the book is recommended for all libraries because of the importance of its findings. -J. H. Larson, University of North Dakota
